Christina brought her daughter Cara, 13, who was begging for piano lessons, to check out Tacoma Music Academy after seeing one of our reduced tuition program flyers in town. Two other siblings, Xavier and Lyla, came along while two other little ones were at home with their hard working dad, the only provider for the family of 7, 8, or 9, depending on how many foster children they also had at the time.
There wasn’t much money to spare in the family, but fortunately Cara could enroll with help of subsidized tuition - a scholarship from a private individual and a grant.
Christina could now enroll Cara into our Jumpstart program. The next day Xavier and Lyla also showed up for the first lesson, wanting to try the piano. Enough scholarship money was found for the family.
Two months later, their foster child Daniel, 17, joined the group, quickly catching up on the songs and note reading.
From that moment onward, love and appreciation for music grows in these young people who without support from a generous sponsor would not have had an opportunity to learn to play piano.
Like Cara and her family, there are a number of students waiting to be enrolled into group piano lessons with tuition assistance. While the group lessons are more affordable than private lessons, many families still can't afford them.
